Author(s): Katy Ridnouer
Publisher: ASCD, Virginia, USA
Date: 2006
Pages: 189
Size: 1.43 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: American English

Although the United States trains more than enough teachers to meet its needs, the attrition rate for educators is higher than that of any other professional occupation. According to a report from the National Commission for Teaching and America’s Future, up to one-third of new U.S. teachers leave the profession within the first few years. Katy, the writer, was one of them. [+/-]

Katy has seen herself how caring for students helps a teacher meet curricular goals; tapping into the excitement of reaching a child emotionally provides energy to reach that child academically. Try out the many approaches that she illustrates throughout this book, and you will find yourself concentrating less on “dealing with” your students and more on inspiring them. It is her hope that as you put her guidelines into practice, you will begin to develop your own classroom management style—one that’s a perfect fit for both your personality and your school. This book is intended as a starting point. Your final destination is entirely up to you.

About the author
Katy Ridnouer
has taught students ranging from age 5 to 55 in ethnically and economically diverse classrooms. She has taught English in a public high school and a public middle school and is a member of the faculty at Central Piedmont Community College, where she has taught in a high school diploma program, in a developmental English program, and in a teacher training program. She has been a reading specialist, English teacher, and journalism teacher at a private school for students with learning disabilities, and has taught in a high school equivalency program on the Cheyenne River Reservation. She has also worked with students one-on-one in a tutoring center and in private practice.

Katy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Education degree at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She lives in Matthews, North Carolina, with her husband and three sons. You may contact her at katyr@carolina.rr.com.

"Shortlist SEN Best Academic Book Award." This book very cleverly combines the academic study with a practical, accessible format. Margin summaries allow the browser to find relevant material. Most importantly, the book provides teachers with suggestions on how to better provide for the pupils who are hard to reach and hard to teach. [+/-]

About the author
Susan gained her doctorate by researching the experiences of young people who had become disaffected with school. Here, she uses that information to provide a fascinating insight into the feelings and views of those young people who are hard to motivate. What we learn from her work is that we might not like what we hear, we might not agree with what we hear, but, if we are to include these young people in our schools, then we must listen to them.

Reviews
"This book is an essential tool if schools are to achieve effective ways forward with those students who are unhappy; disaffected and therefore unable to cope with the present system" -SNIP

Publisher: Longman
Date: 1998
Pages: 303
Size: 7.52 Mb

There is no point in learning grammar for the sake of learning grammar. Grammar is the support system of communication and we learn it to communicate better. Grammar explains the why and how of language. We learn it because we just can't do without it. This book deals entirely with English as a foreign language (EFL). It is for intermediate students who are working with a teacher or working on their own. It covers every important area of the English language. [+/-]

Longman English Grammar Practice is a practice book. It is intended to support (not replace) the material in language courses and is organized for this purpose:
• The material is laid out on facing pages.
• Each set of facing pages deals with a major point of grammar.
• This major point is divided into small, manageable amounts of information. Clear notes explain the points to be practised, followed by an exercise on just those points.
• The last exercise is in context, usually an entertaining story with a cartoon illustration. It sums up all you have learnt in the exercises you have just done and shows you how the language works. It is a 'reward' for the hard work you have just been doing!

The GRE is not easy. There is no quick fix that will allow you to "beat" the test. But the GRE is very learnable. If you study hard and master the techniques in this book, your score will improve-significantly. If you don’t have a pencil in your hand, get one now! Don’t just read this book—write on it, study it, scrutinize it! In short, for the next six weeks, this book should be a part of your life. When you have finished the book, it should be marked-up, dog-eared, tattered and torn. [+/-]

This book will introduce you to numerous analytic techniques that will help you immensely, not only on the GRE but in graduate school as well. For this reason, studying for the GRE can be a rewarding and satisfying experience.

Although the quick-fix method is not offered in this book, about 15% of the material is dedicated to studying how the questions are constructed. Knowing how the problems are written and how the test writers think will give you useful insight into the problems and make them less mysterious. Moreover, familiarity with the GRE’s structure will help reduce your anxiety. The more you know about this test, the less anxious you will be the day you take it.

"Words without thought are dead sounds; thoughts without words are nothing. To think is to speak low; to speak is to think aloud." --Max Muller The most powerful and the most perfect expression of thought and feeling through the medium of oral language must be traced to the mastery of words. Nothing is better suited to lead speakers and readers of English into an easy control of this language than the command of the phrase that perfectly expresses the thought. [+/-]

The taste for beauty, truth, and harmony in language can be developed by careful study of well-selected phrases and literary expressions as furnished in this book. A good literary style is formed principally by daily study of great English writers, by careful examination of words in their context, and by a discriminating use of language at all times.

A helpful exercise is to pronounce a phrase aloud and then fit it into a complete sentence of your own making. This practice gives added facility and resourcefulness in the use of words.
