In one of my articles titled Ways to English, I've told you that in blog I talk about different topics: English grammar, English tips, speaking, vocabulary, idioms, tools... and one of these sections is "English bonus".

In the English bonus section, we don't learn "English tips" but we practice some English reading, we talk about some places in the world, some other topics (in English of course) to help you to practice English reading.

Today's article is an English bonus article, (no English tips) and our topic is "konigssee Lake".

A lake is a body of (usually fresh) water surrounded by land, the konigssee lake is situated in  Southernmost Bavaria in Germany. It is a good spot for vacation and having fun!

If you've never seen the konigssee lake, here is a picture ready for you:




You can see the mountains (there are many). It's a little bit foggy there you can see it in the picture.

A lot of tourists come to Bavaria only to see this lake, it's a touristic zone. You can also see the main harbour here:




People often walk around the lake, do some picnics and have fun. They try to explore the lake walking, some of them use the boat to explore the lake even more:




In winter, it is very cold in the konigssee lake, it's a little bit icy too, but visitors don't stop coming to see the lake and have fun, they don't want to miss this cool place.

If you travel to Germany one day, don't forget to go to Bavaria and don't miss the Konigssee lake!

Present tense in English

 Level: Beginner


The present tense is the first thing that you should know if you want to study English grammar. Actually, even if you don't want to study it!!

The present tense is the most used tense in English, or in all languages. We use it everyday. If you want to speak English without knowing the present tense, you'll never do it (I said without knowing, not without studying, because it is possible to speak English without studying the present tense, even without studying English grammar)

We use the present tense when:
-Something is always true  ex: monkeys eat bananas
-Something happen very often  ex: He wakes up at 8 o'clock
-Something happening right now ex: He sees a bird now (but if it is a long action, we use the present continuous)

Better At English

I also told you that there are a lot of blogs and websites who offer you free and great English tools, and also English MP3 files.

One of these URL's is: Better at English, It's a good blog where you can find English MP3 files with their transcript. It's really a great blog, but it's not the only one!

Now, I'll tell you how to use this blog.
First, go to the blog at:  Better at English

Once you get there, choose the title of the conversation you want to download. You can choose from the new conversations, and you can also choose from the archives.

When you choose the text, look for this:

Then, click on the MP3 sign to download the audio of the conversation, click one the PDF to download the transcript of the English conversation.

After that, you will have the two files on your computer.

First, listen to the file without reading the transcript (do it two or three times)

“TOEFL” stands for Check of English as a Foreign Language. The TOEFL is the most widely accepted check to evaluate your English-language skills. This check can help you get admission in most of the colleges and universities across the globe.

I was reading one of my old articles at 10 tips to improve your English pronunciation, and all of the sudden I saw a strange comment written by an Anonymous reader. He said: "i don't have thing for listening?". He wanted to say that he didn't find things to listen to!!

I didn't thing that one day I would read such a thing on my blog! that's why I love comments. I can't know exactly what English students are looking for. If it's also your case, you're welcome to read this!

Test of English as a foreign language popularly known as TOEFL and pronounced as “toe-full ” is an international check that assesses an individual’s proficiency in English language. It is one of the most widely accepted English language tests in the world. Unlike tests like GRE and GMAT, TOEFL not only tests your vocabulary but also your skills in reading , listening and understanding, speaking and writing in English.
TOEFL is a pre-requisite for non-native English speakers for their admission in to international English speaking colleges and universities. Additionally, institutions such as government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses, or scholarship programs may




require this check.
The check was first administered in 1964 and has since been taken by over 23 million students. The TOEFL check is a registered trademark of Educational Testing Service (ETS). The TOEFL Committee of Examiners consists of 12 specialists in linguistics, language testing, teaching or research. Its main responsibility is to advise on TOEFL check content. The committee helps make sure the check is a valid measure of English language proficiency reflecting current trends and methodologies.
What makes TOEFL stand out from remainder of the exams is that it is the most widely accepted English language testing examination in the world. It is accepted in over 6000 institutions in 110 countries which includes a number of the top rated universities in the world. Also the whole check gets over on the same day which helps the check taker save time and travel costs. In case you require to improve your score you could always retake the check after 7 days. The institutions always looks at the latest score. A TOEFL score is valid only for 2years after which it is removed from the database.

Scores for the listening and structure sections range from 31-68. For reading, the range is 31-67. The average of the three scores is taken and multiplied by 10, to give a total score of between 310 and 677.
The Check of Written English is scored separately. The essay is independently rated by three assessors, and the average of the three scores is taken. An essay can score between 0 and 6, although 0 is only given if the paper is blank, the essay is in a different language, or the wrong query has been answered.

LISTENING

Query types include listening for basic comprehension, recognising the speaker’s attitude, degree of certainty, function or purpose, recognising the organisation of information and understanding relationships between ideas, making inferences and drawing conclusions, making connections, recognising topic changes, examples, digressions, aside statements, introductions and conclusions.
SPEAKING
The speaking section consists of 6 tasks. In the first task, the check taker must express and defend a personal choice from a given section. In the second task, the check taker must defend a personal choice between three contrasting behaviours or courses of action. 15 seconds is allowed to prepare the response, and 45 seconds to deliver it.
Tasks 3 to 6 are integrated. 30 seconds is allowed to prepare the response, and one minute to deliver it. Tasks 3 and 4 involve reading a passage, listening to a passage which comments on issues in the reading, and then summarising the speaker’s opinion, or relating important information from both the reading and listening passages.
Task 5 involves listening to a passage and then showing understanding of a controversy expressed, or giving an opinion about how to solve the issue. Task 6 involves listening to a lecture and then summarising it or showing how examples relate to the general topic.
WRITING
The writing section consists of 2 tasks. The first task (30 minutes) is integrated. Check takers read a short text and then listen to someone speaking about the same topic but from a different point of view. They then write a summary of important points from the listening passage, and show how they relate to the reading passage, in a suggested length of 150-225 words.
For the second task (20 minutes), check takers write an essay, stating, explaining and supporting their view on an issue, in a maximum of 300 words.
SCORE
Each section is scored from 0-30, giving a total score of between 0 and 120.

The listening and structure sections are computer adaptive, which means that the level of difficulty of a query is based on the check taker’s response to the earlier one. The listening section consists of 11-17 dialogues with 1 query each, 2-3 short conversations, up to a minute long with 2 or 3 questions each, and 4-6 mini-lectures and discussions, up to 2 minutes long with 3-6 questions each.
The reading section consists of 4-5 passages from academic texts, 250-350 words each with 11 questions per passage.
The writing section consists of an essay where check takers state, describe and support their view on an issue.
SCORE
Scores for each section range from 0-30. (Structure and writing are combined). The average of the 3 scores is then taken and multiplied by 10, to give a total score of between 0 and 300.
Some additional tips to do well for your TOEFL examination:
In case you are a person with slow rate of reading, do not waste time by reading the whole passage. In lieu try reading the first sentence of every paragraph and then read the query and find the answer from the passage.
Developing lovely writing pace helps in the listening section. It helps you write down the exact lines of the lecture and thus enabling you to score high in the listening section. This also helps people with poor concentration in listening.
Speaking sections are usually thought about hard taking in to consideration the time limit to speak on a subject given to you out of the blue. You could always practice speaking on simple topics such as your hobby, favourite book or film etc. Also for the case where you require to make a choice it is always better to open your speech by stating your choice first and then the reasons for choosing that choice.
Writing section is comparatively more relaxing as you get more time to think. Always divide your essay in to paragraphs. It is always lovely to have an introduction, a body and a proper conclusion. Always stick to the topic and give valid points than being vague. A short but valid essay gives more impression than a long vague one. Try not to exceed the word limit. Seldom make grammatical or spelling mistakes. In cases of doubt use simple short sentences and replace the words for which you don’t know the right spelling.

In the last article Everyday English or Formal English, I talked about which English should an English learner learn first.

I said that this depends on your English learning goals, but if you don't have a goal the best choice is to start with "casual English", but in both cases if you learn the two is better.

The first difference between the two, is the use of each of them. Formal English is being used in Academic situations, for example if you write an academic letter, you should not use slangs and informal English!!!

A second use of formal English is with people you don't know very well, or older than you, but this one is going to disappear step by step.

Casual English is used everywhere, for example if you have some friends, you won't use formal English when taking with them. Also when you talk to your parents...etc

Casual English is more used than formal English. If you speak formal English in no Academic situations, people will immediately see you as a strange person. In the other hand, if you use casual English in an academic situation, they will think that you are impolite, so be very careful where to use each one!!!

In formal English, you should only use words you find in the dictionary, you should use correct grammar but in casual English, you can use Slangs, idioms,  incorrect grammar...

Another thing is that formal English is used especially when writing but everyday English is used when speaking. In fact native speakers know when using each one without thinking, they think that this is a formal situation or not, they instantly use the right type.

If you live in the United stated, you will know everything about this topic. Remember: listening is the key to everything is your English learning!

Usage of Idioms in Toefl Exam

What is an Idiom?

An idiom is an expression (i.e. term or phrase) the meaning of which cannot be concluded from the dictionary definitions & the arrangement of its elements, but refers in lieu to a figurative meaning that is known only through conventional use. This explanation is an adaptation from wikipedia. What I am concerned about is the usage of idioms as well as a thorough understanding of their occurrence in study abroad qualifying examinations like GRE GMAT TOEFL & SAT. Most students who don't have English as their native language face difficulties in


the aforementioned exams due to the surprise elements like idioms .One obvious reason is that idioms are manners of communication which are natural to the native speakers of a specific language. You may have idioms for your native language & admittedly, nowadays it is in fact difficult to converse without idioms. The knowledge of these elements of speech doesn't bother you most of the times because you use it in your native language. When a study abroad aspirant faces idioms in examination preparation it becomes cumbersome because most of the study abroad exams are in English & English has a giant range of idioms currently in use. However, most of the educational & testing services have a basic collection of idioms which they require to check or expect you to know. In case you plan to take any examination like the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL you won't face lots of complex idiomatic expressions in the text or questions asked. I am providing a short list of idioms which helped me earn first rate scores in my exams & still help me understand the content of speech of the people around me. I have realized that without knowing these most common expressions it is without a doubt difficult to understand what others say in a study abroad program. Here is a list of idioms which will enhance your verbal & written communication skills in English, in case you learn to accommodate them.

Everyday English or Formal English

As many languages, English is divided to Formal English and Informal English.

Formal English is the one used in schools, when you write letters....

Informal English is the one spoken in everyday life. Native speakers, American children speak this kind of English. Informal English is also called "Casual English" or "Everyday English".

For you as an English student: which English should you learn? Everyday English or Formal English?

Well the answer is very simple: the best decision is to learn both!

Many English students confuse this question ( which English should I learn: formal English or informal English?) with: which English should I start to learn first?

For the first question, the answer is simple: learn them both.

But for the second question, there are more details:

Well, it is a little bit difficult to decide whether you should start with casual English or formal English. Some English teachers say: "start with formal English, so you can get a job, writer administrative letters..." and some other English teachers say: "no, start with everyday English, so you can speak like an American or like native speaker, you can understand native speakers..."

For me, as an English teacher, I won't tell you to start with formal English or informal English, but I'm going to tell you, according to your case, which English should you start with:

What is your goal when you're learning English? why are you learning English? are you learning English for business? for your studies? to get the TOEFL? to speak English?

As mentioned, it depends only on you. I'm going to explain some details for you and I think you will immediately decide yourself which English you should learn:

If your goal is to pass an English test, for example to get a job, I mean a formal test of course, then you should learn formal English and once you get a good level, you start to learn casual English.

If your main goal is to speak with native speakers then you should start with everyday English and once you speak like native speakers, you start to learn grammar and formal English.

OK, and if you don't have a goal, or you don't know what to do?

If you have time (you're just learning English to have fun) and you don't care if you learn formal English first or casual English, I recommend that you begin with "everyday English". I chose this for two reasons:

1-When an American child starts to learn English, he first learns everyday English, and once he can handle it, he starts to learn grammar and formal English.  And remember our rule: you should learn English like children.

2-Even in business nowadays, they don't use formal English. Formal English is going to be useless step by step. Try to listen to English radios or to the News and you will see that the English they are using is not formal; they're using casual English!

If you can't know which English they are using, you probably don't know what Formal English and Informal English really are! That why in the next article I'm going to talk about the differences between Formal English and casual English, with examples... You will finally know which English someone is using when he speaks... I think you'll love everyday English rather than formal English. I hope you won't miss the next article.

The Past Tense

We are going to study English grammar !!
For some of you who have read my article about English grammar, They should be chocked right now!

Well, I've seen that many English students do want to study grammar, I don't why but I've said that English Grammar is not so terrible, but it is only useful for a specific kind of English students.

So, read my articles about grammar if you ONLY believe that English grammar is done for you.

So, let's start with the past tense:

We use the past tense to describe or talk about something that happened in the past, not only this but also finished in the past.
For example, if you started traveling one hour ago, and you're still traveling right now, it's NOT past tense.
But if you started traveling one hour ago, and it's finished: This is past tense.

Now you know when to use the past tense, so I don't want to see you using the past tense instead of the present or...ok?

Well, how can you get the past tense?
It's simple, but before you should know that there are two kinds of verbs: regular verbs and irregular verbs.
How can you a verb is regular or irregular? well, this is the biggest problem, you should know it before, you should have found the verb before, you should have a list of irregular verbs in your head!! (is it difficult?)

For many English students, they say: "I can't use the past tense, I can't know the irregular verbs, there are a lot of verbs, I can't memorize all English verbs!!"
Yes of course, no one can memorize all the English verbs even native speakers!! but you should know at least the verbs that you use everyday, verbs that you use in your field...

Once you know if a verb is regular or irregular, the next step is this:
Regular verb --> ad "ed" at the end of the verb, for example: to travel--> he traveled, (do the same with all the pronouns)

Irregular verb--> no way!! you should memorize them.

7 Steps to English vocabulary

To speak English fluently, you should know as many vocabulary as possible. Every English students knows this, but the problem is that they don't use the right method to learn more vocabulary, most students take a dictionary and start to memorize words randomly, which has no meaning!!

I wrote these simple steps just for you. If you follow them, you will learn more vocabulary in a short time: 

1) choose a theme:

This is the first step, you should select which theme do you want to learn vocabulary in, for example you can choose food, transport, ...This is very powerful because whenever you remember one English word, you will also remember all the other words you found with it.

I advice you to choose a subject you need its vocabulary, for example if you are a business man you can choose a theme related to business...

2) Use images, you remember English words faster:

The idea of images is an old idea, but it still works. It is also used with native children speakers.
I've already talked about children and learning English in this article Some Tips to Speak English and also in many others.

3) Write English phrases:

Generally we talk about writing new English words, but here I'm talking about writing English phrases which contains new English words. If you find a new word, write the whole phrase it is in. Many English students have a huge vocabulary in their mind but they don't know how to use this vocabulary because they just wrote word lists in their notebooks. So, you should write English phrases to do two things in one.

4) Pick up related English words:

What does it mean? well this means when you find a new word, try to find groups of words that come with it. It is also called word trees. For example, if your word is hotel, you can add "room, bed..."
This is very easy, if you chose a theme as I said.

5) English words with the same root:

This is also very powerful, and very easy but you can skip it if you don't know or you don't find words.
It consists of finding other English words that have the same root (noun, adjective, verb...)
For example: to travel-->traveling--> traveler-->...

6) Use the new English words:

If you think that having phrases with new words written in your notebook is enough, you're completely wrong!
you should use the new words you found, you should practice with your English friends (here is the best way to practice English:  speak English with native speakers)

7) Review New English vocabulary constantly:

If you don't review the new vocabulary you learned, it's the same as if you've done nothing!
Reviewing is so much important, The learning method is composed by: understanding, learning, reviewing. If you delete one of them, it will become a big problem (maybe you will never speak English if you do it!!!)

English holidays

Are you getting bored when learning English? You can't study English no more?
You're normal, don't worry because there is nothing wrong with you!

All human beings get bored when they repeat doing the same thing, you should change your habits a little bit, you have to take some holidays!

It's a given that you should take holidays when getting bored, but where should you go? where do you have to spend your holidays?

As an English learner, my advice for you is to go to a place where English is spoken so you will practice English even when spending your holidays.

If you have money, you can spend your holidays at the United States. You find a great hotel in the United states (almost all hotels are great in the United States).

Look to this hotel for example:



This is one of the best hotels in the United States, it is located on the famed Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, USA.

Even Americans come to this hotel to spend their holidays, if you have enough money you can try to spend some time here, it is called Paris Las Vegas Hotel.

For me, I like nature rather than the city (the city is a little bit boring and noisy) I love hiking!

It is situated in California, It's a great spot too! I love it so much.

If you read texts where you understand only 40% or less, you will find many words you don't understand (60%) and you won't understand them unless you use your English dictionary, so you can't memorize all these new words at the same time!!

But if you read easy texts where you understand 90% or more, the remaining 10% of words you don't understand will be very easy for you because you're going to understand them without using your English dictionary and you'll memorize them easily! (That's why I write easy articles for you)

Reading will help you to improve your English vocabulary, your English spelling and many more... It's very important, so don't forget it!

10 tips to improve your English pronunciation

There are a lot of techniques you should do in order to improve you English pronunciation:

Everyone can speak English clearly

The first thing you should know is that everyone can speak English with a clear pronunciation, everybody has a mouth, a tongue and lips. Everyone can speak every language because there is no difference between human; we are all born with the same mechanism.

English environment

If you really want to improve your English pronunciation, you should be surrounded by English everyday, which means the best thing is to be in a place where we talk only in English, like the USA or Britain or Australia...
If you can't have this situation, you can do it by listening to English everyday, you can listen to English radio, or TV, you can also have some CDs in English...

listen and don't speak

This is one of the biggest differences between children and adults, you should find the solution to this problem to not only improve your English pronunciation but also your global English learning which means English grammar, English speaking...
When someone talks to you or to someone else in English you should not speak at the same time, you should listen, focus on his speaking, his English intonation, which words he stress, which words he doesn't stress...
Never speak when listening to English, always focus on listening first, speaking will come later!

Learn English subconsciously

You must know that you will learn English if you try, you will speak English like a native speaker if you don't stop, but the problem is always the time.
Never try to learn English in a short time, listen always to English and be sure that you will speak it one day, you don't know exactly when but you will learn it.
Always listen to English and don't try anything else, you will learn English subconsciously, believe me!

Focus on listening

Never try to speak fast, always try to speak English slowly at the first time, you will get faster subconsciously without doing anything, you should pronounce each word correctly, that's the goal!

Practice English

Always practice your English, read out loud, speak English with your friends, practice English everyday, this will help you to know the correct way to stress syllables.

Speak out loud

Never be quiet, always speak out loud, this helps you a lot if you are shy when you speak English.

Record yourself speaking English

And compare your speaking with a native speaker, you will see the mistakes you've done, you will improve your English pronunciation.

Have some English friends

When someone talks to you or to someone else in English you should not speak at the same time, you should listen, focus on his speaking, his English intonation, which words he stress, which words he doesn't stress...
Never speak when listening to English, always focus on listening first, speaking will come later!
