How to Develop the Language Skills of Your Preschool Children
1. Between ages 2 and 5, children acquire a tremendous amount of information on language. At age 5, the differences between children with different degrees of language skills can be striking. One child may have a vocabulary of 4,000-5,000 words; another child only has one to two thousand. [+/-]

As children make the transition from preschool to kindergarten, one of the best predictors of school success is how many words they know and use.

That is why I made several worksheets to improve the vocabulary of your children.

2. Make reading aloud a part of your everyday routine. Even if you just read for five minutes or less each morning and the same amount each evening, you'll be exposing your child to a great wealth of new words. Don't be surprised if you start hearing some of these words slip into your child's everyday speech. I love to read nursery rhymes for my daughter. I have my favorites here for you to print and read to your prescholer.

3. Encourage creativity. Preschool children get excited about making things. I have several dot to dot, colouring and other worksheets that your prescholer is going to love.

Alphabet Worksheets
One of the first steps in becoming a successful reader is to learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet. The alphabetic principle teaches that spoken language is represented by written words that are made up of varying combinations of letters, and that these letters and combinations of them make up all of the sounds in spoken language. Attaching sounds to these letters and learning to write them paves the way to successful reading and writing.
On this place we have free handwriting practice worksheets for children learning to write the alphabet

These worksheets are to be printed and traced. Tracing the shape is a great precursor to learning how to print letters. The alphabet printables are a great way for preschoolers and kindergarten kids to practice printing skills.

Nursery Rhymes
Why Teach Your Children Nursery Rhymes?

There are many benefits that can be gained by reading nurery rhymes to your children. Here are five great reasons!

1. Nursery rhymes helps the development of literacy.
2. Poetry is an excellent way to teach and reinforce grammar and vocabulary skills.
3. Poetry provides a focus for reading and writing, and helps children learn how to be concise.
4. Poetry supports components defined in brain research such as the importance of searching for patterns, and is an acceptable way for children to express emotions and feelings.
5. Poetry, and specially nursery rhymes, provide opportunities for children to listen for rhyming patterns, an important phonological awareness skill.

Becoming a Teacher: Issues in Secondary Teaching, 3rd Ed.

Title: Becoming a Teacher: Issues in Secondary Teaching
Editor(s): Justin Dillon and Meg Maguire
Publisher: McGraw-Hill
Date: 2007, 3rd Edition
Pages: 393
Size: 1.38 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: British English

If you are learning how to be a teacher, this book has been written for you. It has been written by a group of people who have two things in common. The first is that they have devoted most of their lives to education - teaching, researching or both. The second is that they have all worked in the Department of Education at King’s College London. [+/-]

This unique and powerful combination has resulted in what you hold in your hands – thoughts, ideas, words, questions, answers, wit and wisdom. This edition contains 28 chapters, two more than the second edition and five more than the first edition. There are new chapters on education for sustainability, school effectiveness and improvement, and education policy. There are 11 new contributors and many new ideas and issues. However, the overall philosophy of the book remains unchanged. This is not a ‘tips for teachers’ book, although some chapters do focus on technical issues. Each chapter is designed to give you some background in terms of, say, the historical context and to illuminate the key issues that you will be faced with every day.

Much of teaching relies on confidence. You need to be confident in your knowledge of your subject. Your students need to be confident in you as a teacher. Confidence can develop through experience and through feedback from other people. This book is designed to help you to become more confident in your understanding of what learning to teach involves. There will be much in this book that you have not thought of before – things that you disagree with or things that you feel are obvious. It is designed to be dipped into rather than read from beginning to end and, we hope, will point you in the direction of further reading.

Author(s): Katy Ridnouer
Publisher: ASCD, Virginia, USA
Date: 2006
Pages: 189
Size: 1.43 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: American English

Although the United States trains more than enough teachers to meet its needs, the attrition rate for educators is higher than that of any other professional occupation. According to a report from the National Commission for Teaching and America’s Future, up to one-third of new U.S. teachers leave the profession within the first few years. Katy, the writer, was one of them. [+/-]

Katy has seen herself how caring for students helps a teacher meet curricular goals; tapping into the excitement of reaching a child emotionally provides energy to reach that child academically. Try out the many approaches that she illustrates throughout this book, and you will find yourself concentrating less on “dealing with” your students and more on inspiring them. It is her hope that as you put her guidelines into practice, you will begin to develop your own classroom management style—one that’s a perfect fit for both your personality and your school. This book is intended as a starting point. Your final destination is entirely up to you.

About the author
Katy Ridnouer
has taught students ranging from age 5 to 55 in ethnically and economically diverse classrooms. She has been a reading specialist, English teacher, and journalism teacher at a private school for students with learning disabilities, and has taught in a high school equivalency program on the Cheyenne River Reservation. She has also worked with students one-on-one in a tutoring center and in private practice.

Pages: 151
Size: 1.67 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: British English

"Shortlist SEN Best Academic Book Award." This book very cleverly combines the academic study with a practical, accessible format. Margin summaries allow the browser to find relevant material. Most importantly, the book provides teachers with suggestions on how to better provide for the pupils who are hard to reach and hard to teach. [+/-]

About the author
Susan gained her doctorate by researching the experiences of young people who had become disaffected with school. Here, she uses that information to provide a fascinating insight into the feelings and views of those young people who are hard to motivate. What we learn from her work is that we might not like what we hear, we might not agree with what we hear, but, if we are to include these young people in our schools, then we must listen to them.

Reviews
"This book is an essential tool if schools are to achieve effective ways forward with those students who are unhappy; disaffected and therefore unable to cope with the present system" -SNIP

"This is a valuable and well-written book which deserves to be widely read" -Support for Learning

"The structure of the book is well organized and the use of marginal summaries is particularly use for those wishing an overview of the key themes from the book" -Educational Psychology in Practice

Longman English Grammar Practice for Intermeidate Students

Level: Intermediate

Publisher: Longman
Date: 1998
Pages: 303
Size: 7.52 Mb
Format: PDF

There is no point in learning grammar for the sake of learning grammar. Grammar is the support system of communication and we learn it to communicate better. Grammar explains the why and how of language. We learn it because we just can't do without it. This book deals entirely with English as a foreign language (EFL). It is for intermediate students who are working with a teacher or working on their own. It covers every important area of the English language. [+/-]

Longman English Grammar Practice is a practice book. It is intended to support (not replace) the material in language courses and is organized for this purpose:
• The material is laid out on facing pages.
• Each set of facing pages deals with a major point of grammar.
• This major point is divided into small, manageable amounts of information. Clear notes explain the points to be practised, followed by an exercise on just those points.
• The last exercise is in context, usually an entertaining story with a cartoon illustration. It sums up all you have learnt in the exercises you have just done and shows you how the language works. It is a 'reward' for the hard work you have just been doing!
