English as a Second Language

Title: English as a Second Language: Languages and Linguistics
Author(s): David J. Alonso
Publisher: Nova
ISBN: 9781611226133
Date: 2011
Pages: 207
Size: 1.59 Mb

Language: American English

English as a Second Language (ESL) education has gained an increasingly important role in career development in science, business, and industry on the global stage. Language teaching practice often assumes that most of the difficulties that learners face in the study of English are a consequence of the degree to which their native language differs from English. One great challenge for adult ESL learners is to reduce or eliminate 'foreign accent' in their English pronunciation. This book presents current research in the study of ESL, including brain plasticity and phonetic training in ESL; using authentic newspaper texts in teaching intermediate vocabulary in ESL learners; EFL/ESL teaching in China; and improving reading skills for ESL learners using SoundSpel.

High School English Grammar and Composition, 2nd Edition

Title: High School English Grammar and Composition, 2nd Edition
Level: High School
Author(s): WREN & MARTIN
Publisher: S. CHAND & COMPANY LTD.
ISBN: 8121900093
Pages: 940
Size: 2.55 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: English

The material in the book has been further updated where called for. It has been felt necessary in particular to revise some material in the chapters dealing with adjectives, active and passive voice, articles and prepositions. Appendix I, which deals with American English, has been expanded. Appendix II has been replaced with a newer set of tests covering the important areas of grammar. [+/-]

It was in the year 1972 that the shrewd visionary Mr. Shyam Lai Gupta obtained the permission of Manecji Cooper Education Trust for the revision of this book and commissioned me to revise it thoroughly. The revised edition came out in 1973 and was well received. One of the main features of the revised edition was the addition of a great deal of new material (such as the three chapters on structures) based on the new developments in the study of English structure and usage. Subsequently the book was revised every four or five years and most extensively in 1999.

Unlike many traditional grammar books, the book in the present form helps the student to use the language as well as giving detailed information about the language. It provides ample guidance and practice in sentence building, correct usage, comprehension, written composition and other allied areas so as to equip the student with the ability to communicate effectively in English.

It is gratifying to learn that this classic work, though primarily intended for use in the Indian subcontinent, is also used in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, ingapore, Mauritius, etc. It is hoped that the book will be found useful in many more countries where English is used as a second or foreign language.

For one reason or other, the experience shows that teachers spend the whole class speaking, while pupils answer with monosyllables. This book provides the teacher with endless questions, besides interactive ideas; with this, an appropriate atmosphere is created for the students to express themselves in English.

The book is made up of 50 units; a different topic being worked out in each unit
There are 40 questions about each topic. An illustration and a text about which the pupils have to make questions and answers as well as give explanations, complete the unit Couples or groups are made up to discuss, to comment about assertions and to decide whether some things are true or false.

Learning Through Practice

Title: Learning Through Practice: Models, Traditions, Orientations and Approaches (Professional and Practice-based Learning)
Author(s): Stephen Billett
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9789048139385
Date: 2010
Pages: 309
Size: 2.96 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: American English

The book’s two sections first explore the conceptual foundations of learning through practice, and then provide detailed examples of its implementation. Long-standing practice-based approaches to learning have been used in many professions and trades. Indeed, admission to the trades and major professions (e.g. medicine, law, accountancy) can only be realised after completing extended periods of practice in authentic practice settings. [+/-]

However, the growing contemporary interest in using practice-based learning in more extensive contexts has arisen from concerns about the direct employability of graduates and the increasing focus on occupation-specific courses in both vocations and higher education.

It is an especially urgent issue in an era of critical skill shortages, rapidly transforming work requirements and an aging workforce combined with a looming shortage of new workforce entrants. We must better understand how existing models of practice-based learning are enacted in order to identify how they can be applied to different kinds of employment and workplaces. The contributions to this volume explore ways in which learning through practice can be conceptualised, enacted, and appraised through an analysis of the traditions, purposes, and processes that support this learning—including curriculum models and pedagogic practices.

Teacher Preparation for Linguistically Diverse Classrooms

Title: Teacher Preparation for Linguistically Diverse Classrooms: A Resource for Teacher Educators

Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0415997925
Date: 2011
Pages: 252
Size: 1.63 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: American English

Teacher educators today need knowledge and practical ideas about how to prepare all pre-service and in-service teachers (not just bilingual or ESL specialists) to teach the growing number of students in K-12 classrooms in the United States who speak native languages other than English. This book is at the forefront in focusing exclusively on the preparation of mainstream classroom teachers for this population of students. [+/-]

Part one provides the conceptual and contextual framework for the book, including a comprehensive discussion of relevant demographic trends and an analysis of national and state policies. Part two presents examples of initiatives in different institutional and geographic settings, highlighting three essential elements of teacher preparation: curriculum content, program design, and program coherence.

Meeting a pressing need among teacher educators left to figure out, largely by trial and error, how best to prepare non-specialist classroom teachers to work with ELLs, this book both contributes to the research base and provides practical information to help readers envision possibilities they can apply in their own settings.

What Expert Teachers Do

Title: What Expert Teachers Do: Enhancing Professional Knowledge for Classroom Practice
Author(s): John Loughran
Publisher: Allen & Unwin
ISBN: 0415579678
Date: 2010
Pages: 246
Size: Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: English

How do expert teachers do it? How do they enhance student learning? How do they manage the dilemmas and tensions inherent in working with 25 different students in every lesson?

Internationally respected teacher educator John Loughran argues that teachers knowledge of what they do is largely tacit and often misunderstood. In this book, he distils the essence of professional practice for classroom teachers. Drawing on the best research on pedagogy, he outlines the crucial principles of teaching and learning, and shows how they are translated into practice using real classroom examples. [+/-]

He emphasises that teaching procedures need to be part of an integrated approach, so that they are genuinely meaningful and result in learning. Throughout, he shows how teachers can engage their students in ways that create a real need to know, and a desire to become active learners. What Expert Teachers Do is for teachers who want to become really accomplished practitioners.
